Abstract

Symbolic of celebration, the tamale brings forth memories, emotions and comfort. Evolved to reflect how past conquests, travel, and changing cultures have shaped Mexican cuisine, the tamale has migrated with people across borders bringing familiarity to new places. The tamalada, a social event where family and friends gather with a goal of preparing tamales, is a custom connecting Mexicans to their heritage, while passing knowledge and traditions to new generations. Corn, once considered an inferior grain to wheat, marked a division between Europeans and Native Americans. This humble grain now serves as a centerpiece to unite families with culture.
